We know that research is better when it involves individuals who have knowledge and experience of the issues being studied.
This Midlands PSRC Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPI/E) Strategy sets out our approach to involving and engaging patients and the public. We want to ensure that people from different communities shape our research by sharing their insights and perspectives based on their unique experiences of care.
To develop our PPI/E Strategy, we have worked with patients, carers, members of the public, healthcare professionals and researchers. Together, we have developed a vision for involving and engaging patients and the public and six strategic aims, each with its own objectives.
Whilst our Midlands PSRC PPI/E Strategy is ambitious, we have developed a rolling programme of activities with key milestones to keep us on track. We describe the resources available to deliver our activities and the partners and collaborators that will support us to achieve our vision.
We know that developing this PPI/E Strategy is just the start. Throughout our five years, we will reflect on and learn from our experiences of public involvement and engagement. We want to continually improve our ways of working with patients and the public: as we state in our Midlands PSRC PPI/E vision, putting people at the heart of what we do is key to helping us prevent patient safety errors and make care safer.
Public Involvement & Engagement Strategy
NIHR Midlands PSRC has worked with a core group of public contributors and the wider Midlands PSRC Community to develop its Public Involvement and Engagement Strategy, which is available online.
The Strategy is underpinned by the key principles of Co-Production.
Our Strategy includes the following sections:
- Vision Statement
- Strategic Aims with key objectives
- Delivery plan with key milestones
- Strategy Logic Model
The Strategy will be reviewed Annually by a Strategy Group to ensure that Midlands PSRC achieves its strategic aims.
NIHR UK Standards for Involvement
Midlands PSRC aligns to the NIHR UK Standards for Involvement, which were launched in November 2019.
Building on experiences of using the Standards, Midlands PSRC holds an annual workshop, which uses the UK Standards for involvement as a framework to reflect on ways of involving the public in its activities. During the workshops, we consider approaches to involvement in each of the Standards:
- Inclusive Opportunities
- Working Together
- Support and Learning
- Communications
- Impact
- Governance
