Clinical Decision Support Tools (CDST) to improve complex/ conflicting guideline compliance

We will build computerised care algorithms for complex diseases such as diabetic ketoacidosis, which include complex and dynamic treatment proposals informed by changing physiology and blood biomarkers.

As part of this project, we will:

• To understand the prevalence, severity, and impact of guideline non-compliance in patients with diabetic emergencies in acute medical trusts.

• To hold workshops with key stakeholders (domain experts, prescribers, patients, the public, representatives from secondary care organisations, electronic health systems and healthcare regulators/policy makers) to develop individual targets for this and subsequent CDSTs including co-development of algorithm, testing and deployment and how the algorithm will interact with the end user.

• To build an algorithm which proposes fluids and fast acting insulin based on blood sugar, pH, biochemistry, and blood ketones.

• To test the algorithm in a sandbox of an acute care setting (already built and available) and iterate based on performance.
