Maternal Health Project 1: Risk identification

Failure to identify risk is often a ‘skills-based’ error, resulting from imperfect human vigilance. A back-up system in the form of decision-support can minimise errors of omission.

We aim to identify and prioritise risk stratification tools to be used at booking in pregnant women to support clinical decision-making. We will:

  • Map individual risk factors recommended by current national guidelines for assessment of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes at booking;

  • Update our previous systematic review on prediction models for adverse pregnancy outcomes for use in clinical practice;

  • Map the existing risk assessment and management protocols in the participating sites;

  • Establish a dedicated PPIE group, and prioritise the pregnancy conditions (e.g. gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction) for risk assessment;

  • Co-develop care pathways and decision tools for management of various risk groups through focus groups and surveys of clinicians and diverse groups of women and their families.
