Project 5: Predictors of Poor Outcomes from Sepsis (Leveraged Project)

Using real-world data to identify patients at highest risk from sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection and a major cause of emergency hospital admissions. However, not all patients with sepsis follow the same clinical course. This study analyses electronic health record data to understand which factors—such as age, co-existing conditions, or response to early treatment—are linked to poor outcomes. These insights can be used to develop better risk tools and help NHS teams target interventions more effectively.

Aims

  • To identify patient and clinical factors linked to poor outcomes from sepsis (e.g. death, ICU admission, readmission).
  • To understand how risk varies across different populations and healthcare settings.
  • To support the development of tools that can help clinicians identify high-risk patients earlier in their care journey.
  • To inform future decision support systems and treatment guidelines for sepsis.
